Did you know that nachos were invented somewhat by accident? Let us tell you this delectable story: it will give you something to talk about with your friends the next time you order it at a restaurant!
It was in 1940, in Piedras Negrasa city in northern Mexico very close to the U.S. border.
One day, the wives of military men who lived in Eagle Pass, Texas, crossed the border to go to the Victory Club restaurant. The story goes that they went shopping and, before heading home, they wanted to grab a bite. However, when they arrived, the restaurant was closed! Fortunately, the chef, Ignacio Anaya, nicknamed ‘Nacho’ by his friends and colleagues, was there. He reassured the women by telling them he would still prepare something to eat with whatever he had on hand.
He fried a few pieces of fresh tortillas, covered them with cheese and jalapeño peppers. He baked his creation for a few minutes and served them what he called “Nacho’s special.” Needless to say, they loved the new dish made just for them!
It soon started appearing in restaurants all over Mexico, as well as the United States. The version we eat today is certainly quite Americanized, but it still retains the original Mexican essence.
It might be a classic for many, but here’s a little reminder of the key ingredients not to overlook when making the best nacho possible.
